As an Architect and Builder/Developer I can tell you that by IBC building codes, ABS can only be used as a drain line. I/E. Sewer, raindrains, Ect. it is not approved for pottable water.
ABS is not a food grade material. In residential construction it is used for waste lines where it is very effective. PVC, CPVC and PEX are used for potable water lines. When burned ABS can be toxic.
