It was hit by a curse when he put on a cursed ring. He was able to return to Hogwarts and Snape managed to contain the curse, temporarily, in Dumbledore's hand, meaning it looked shrivelled and black. But in the end, the curse was going to spread and give Dumbledore a rather agonising death.
The temptation of being able to use the Stone was too much for Dumbledore to resist. He put on the ring because he thought the stone would give him a chance to see his dead mother and sister again (DH33,DH35).
Gaunt's ring After retrieving the ring Albus Dumbledore himself fell victim to a curse that, even when contained, would likely have killed him within the year. Once rendered defunct as a Horcrux, the stone was placed inside a Golden Snitch and left to Harry Potter in Dumbledore's will.
While at Hogwarts, Tom openly wore the ring. He later made the ring into his second Horcrux. In 1996, Albus Dumbledore retrieved the ring, eventually destroying it with Godric Gryffindor's Sword.
After Dumbledore returned to Hogwarts, he used Godric Gryffindor's Sword to crack the Resurrection Stone so as to destroy it as a Horcrux. While the act did destroy the ring as one of Riddle's Horcruxes, it did not stop the fatal curse. The curse gave Dumbledore's hand a withered black look, as though it had died.

Voldemort understood this, he knew the dangers of creating so many horcruxes, so he didn't dare to create any more even though he knew some of them were gone. Voldemort wanted a seven-part soul, which would mean that he had 6 horcruxes, and the 7th part of his soul would be residing inside himself.
Voldemort wanted to have his soul splited in 7 parts because he believed that 7 was the most powerful number, the number of perfection. Therefore he created intentionally 6 horcruxes in order to have 7 fragments of his soul: the main one - he himself, plus the other parts - the horcruxes.
Start your job search as soon as possible, and invest as much time and energy as you can if you are committed to finding a job by graduation. Since many graduates find employment outside of their college's formal recruiting program, it makes sense to start as early as the summer before your senior year.
