Many experts and authorities consider silicones to be nontoxic and safe for contact with food and drink. For example, Health Canada states: "There are no known health hazards associated with use of silicone cookware. Silicone rubber does not react with food or beverages, or produce any hazardous fumes."
Essentially, a silicone material is generally food safe if it is listed as 100% food-grade silicone. Other materials within a silicone composition (fillers) may not have the same properties that make silicone so suitable for use in food applications.
If the silicone product pulled white and has a pungent smell, then it can be concluded that it is an ordinary silicone, not food grade. All the baby bibs, baby spoons, food containers, and some other baby products are made from only 100% food-grade silicone which is good quality.
While not a “100% natural” material like rubber, food-grade silicone is a non-toxic polymer mostly made from silica (sand). It can withstand heating and freezing without leaching or off-gassing, hazardous chemicals – unlike plastics, which contaminate food in these environments.
As an FDA approved rubber, silicone also has great chemical resistance to many common chemicals and oils that are used in areas where consumables may be handled or prepared.
Take a place in the silicone product. Both hands pull hard on both sides. If there is white, it is ordinary silica gel. If there is no white, it is food grade silica gel.
Food grade silicone is a non-toxic type of silicone that doesn't contain any chemical fillers or byproducts, making it safe for use with food. Due to its resiliency, non-porous surface and sustainability, food grade silicone is essentially soft glass.
Silicone's resistance to temperatures and chemicals ultimately means that it does not react with foodstuffs or any other media encountered in the process line. The use of silicone sealing therefore does not result in any hazardous byproducts which could adversely affect the health of the workforce or end consumers.
Smooth-Sil™ 940, 950, and 960 are food grade silicones suitable for making baking molds and trays, ice trays, casting butter, chocolate and other applications used to produce food.
Food grade silica gel has very good toughness and elasticity. It is not easy to be permanently deformed by the action of external force, and the hand feel will be smoother, while ordinary silicone products are easily deformed and rough to the touch.
