Joining Hermitcraft is not up to me. Hermitcraft is an invite-only server: the Hermits decide who to invite. Right now they have enough players for the community to feel tight-knit and manageable, and they don't seem interested in adding anybody new.
In order to keep the servers safe for the Hermits, the HermitCraft servers are known to be kept private. However, they do offer several world downloads on their website so you can play on the same maps your favorite Hermits have!

At the end of Season 1, the founder of Hermitcraft Generikb left the server. This left Hermitcraft without a leader, so XisumaVoid decided to step up as leader in the middle of Season 2 and invited more people.
They are better in terms of grinding, building and redstone, and family-friendly, wholesome content that isn't swearing, NSFW, or has a lot of wars and such. If you're looking for a more slow-paced, family-friendly, wholesome server, then Hermitcraft is much better. However, the DSMP certainly has more action.
