24 hoursAs a general rule of thumb, you should wait at least 24 hours before grouting. The adhesive should be dry and there should be no slippage or movement in your tile pattern.
The tiles will move out of place and you could develop mold behind the wall because it will remain wet for a longer time. Excess grout needs to be wiped off and when the tile is not set they will move or even fall off the wall.
Can You Wait Too Long to Grout Tile? There is no harm in waiting more than 24 hours before you grout your installed tile. As long as the tile surface is kept clean and debris is kept out of the seams between tiles, you can allow your mortar to cure for as long as you wish before grouting.
No problem with the grout adding later on. If you install the tiles properly and the adhesive grabs a proper hold, you don't need the grout to hold it all up. The first row is the most important so make sure that it is set properly as all other tiles will be based off of it.
There ARE, however, fast setting thinsets that arre made to set up in as little as 2 hours. Using these thinsets, you CAN set and grout the same day without any risks.
It will be difficult to reuse the tile, even if it has only been down for a minute or two. You'll likely have to remove the mortar from both the tile and the substrate, and then start again. This becomes increasingly difficult (especially if you're looking to reuse the tile) as the mortar hardens.
You should wait at least 24 hours before grouting the tiles. You may notice that the edges of the thinset or the thinset showing through the grout lines looks dry. The thinset under the tiles isn't receiving as much air as the edges and is therefor not fully cured.
After grouting, you should wait at least another 24 hours before walking on the tile, but a longer period of 48 to 72 hours is preferable. Putting weight on tiles before the mortar, grout and sealant have fully cured can cause the tiles to shift and even break apart.
