It's not quite as simple when you are installing a product like Schluter's Kerdi waterproof membrane. When I install Kerdi I always use cement board. The cost is not much more and the insurance is worth it to me. Bottom line: if there's drywall on your shower walls it better be a Kerdi installation.

Whether or not you need a Kerdi membrane is a factor of use. In normal residential use I wouldn't worry about it. Backerboard plus a waterproofing membrane like Redgard is all that is needed for tub surrounds with thinset then tile. Kerdi really offers very little advantage over hardiboard plus membrane.
Yes! In fact, it's advised to use this product on drywall in your bathroom before laying tile and other materials. Installing Kerdi on your drywall provides protection against rot, mildew and mold growth. When Kerdi is installed properly, it can serve as an incredibly effective waterproofing layer.
Schluter SET™, ALL-SET™, FAST-SET™ or an unmodified thin-set mortar must be used to construct all KERDI seams to ensure watertightperformance of the system.
Wait 24 hours after the membrane (i.e., Schluter®-KERDI-BAND and Schluter®-KERDI) installation is complete to allow for the final set of the mortar and to ensure waterproof performance of the assembly at seams and connections before water testing.
